Caroline Planté- Musical director, composer, perfomer
Born in Montreal, Canada, Caroline Planté began her musical studies (flamenco guitar and piano) in her native city. Her father, guitarist Marcel Planté 'El Rubio', passed on his musical knowledge and love of music.
Awarded many bursaries both by the Arts Council of Canada and Arts and Letter Council of Quebec, she later perfected her skills in Spain (Sevilla and Madrid) with several master guitarists, singers and dancers.One of the rare women to play flamenco guitar, Caroline progressively carved herself a place of choice in this discipline where men are predominant.
With over 18 years of experience as a composer and guitarist, she participated in the elaboration, composition and interpretation of several important productions in Canada, U.S.A and Spain.
Musical director of Cruceta Flamenco (Madrid, Spain) since 2005, she composed and directed the music for the company's last five productions: Othello (2005), En Rojo (2006), Invernadero-8reflexiones (2009), La Confidencia (2011) , La Diosa Impura (2012) and bpm_danza (2013). These shows were presented at some of the most prestigious festivals in Spain, in Canada and in the USA.
Her first album 8REFLEXIONES features flamenco singer Duquende and Rafael Jiménez Falo, dancer Mariano Cruceta and hip-hop singer Say. In September 2010, her pieces “Luz” and “Invernadero” featured as the original score of short-film “Invernadero”, directed and produced by Mariano Cruceta , winner of the 3rd prize at the 1st Flamenco Short-Films Festival in Madrid (FFLAC 2010). Recorded in Madrid at the mythical recording studio Musigrama, 8REFLEXIONES is the first flamenco album entirely composed and interpreted by a female guitarist and was chosen as one of the 5 best world music albums of 2010 by Le Devoir. It’s a production by Paco Ortega (Niña Pastori, Diego El Cigala, Camarón etc.), Mariano Cruceta and Caroline Planté under the label El Pescador de Estrellas.
In September 2010, she was invited to participate as a soloist at the II Festival Sangre Nueva Jóvenes Flamencos, celebrated at the Teatro de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) where she presented some excerpts from her first album 8REFLEXIONES. She headed the bill along with 14 other artists from Spain and her show was described as “historical”. She also launched the cd at the XVII Jornadas Flamencas de la Fortuna de Leganés (Madrid) among other places In 2011 and 2012 the album was also presented at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, at the Salon de la Guitare de Montréal , the Festival International of the Domaine Forget , at the Chicago Flamenco Festival, and at the Festival des Guitares du Monde en Abitibi.
Since 2012,,she co-directs the Festival Flamenco Montréal. Along with the director and founder of the festival, Benoit Bigham, she entered a new venture to promote the continued growth and development of the art of flamenco in her native city where the enthusiasm for flamenco has continued to florish since it first appeared in the sixties.
Caroline Planté will be featured in a documentary by the Spaniard Alicia Cifredo entitled Tocaoras . It is a documentary about women flamenco guitarists and will be presented on Canal Sur in Spain during the spring of 2013.
